Genius Hour Reflection
Summarize the purpose of your Genius Hour project in 140 characters.
The purpose of our genius hour project is to raise money for our local animal shelter to help them buy food, toys, blankets, beds, and much more for the cats and dogs there. It is to help those animals that have and still are being rescued that have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by their families or even the ones found on the side of the rode. Animals deserve more and to be loved. Put yourself in their position and see how scared you would feel. However, we want all of the animals in a happy and loving environment so we will help the shelter do that. Each of us is here to help along with wanting to make a pet smile!
Explain the process of your Genius Hour project. Be reflective. Be contemplative. Explain and describe your journey. (No Less Than Three FULL Paragraphs.)
Throughout the journey and long process of my groups genius hour project, we finally finished and completed it successfully. Last semester Kim, Avery, Kayla, Marleigh, and I all grouped together to help raise money for our local animal shelter. We wanted to MAKKE a pet smile. All of us worked together by creating tie dye tee shirts with a heart design on the shoulder and sold them to friends and family members along with teachers and students at our school. We sold the shirts for a cheap price around seven or eight dollars depending on how many different colors you wanted on you shirt.
During this time we created weebly web pages to show the process that we went through along with describing it in our very own TED talk video which you can check out on any of our pages. We eventually raised $300 exact and were all beyond excited to donate the money and help out the animals. Ill admit, it was a long time before we donated the money because all of us could not find a time where all of us could go to the shelter and donate it at the same time. Everyone has different schedules and we are all so busy.
Eventually we picked a date two weeks ahead and made our last semester genius hour project be the donating of the money. We all went to the shelter and pet all of the cats and went to see all of the dogs and even pet them too! However, we donated the money and the ladies there thanked us so much and were very surprised that we raised $300. They then took a picture of us and posted it to their facebook page called Almost Home Animal Shelter.
The intention For Genius Hour is NOT only to learn, but ALSO to share your knowledge with others who can and will benefit from your learning. How did you share your learning? What do you hope the result might be? (No Less Than Two Full Paragraphs.)We shared our learning from this experience by showing people you can do what you set your mind to. We had intentions of raising some money….we weren't expecting $300 though! People can learn from this because if they see us do something so nice like this, they will want too also. All of us were very happy and pleased to tell everyone that we donated the money which makes people motivated to learn from us and do the same.
We hope that the result of our genius hour project bring smiles not only to the animals, but to so many people's faces. It was such a great time getting to bond with my friends while making shirts for a good cause. We sold so many shirts because so many people liked them. However, if you set your mind toward a goal and not think anything negative of it, you will succeed in the end. How hard can it be if you really do try? There is nothing better than knowing you did something good for someone of something else in the end.
If you could do anything different with your Genius Hour project what would you do differently and why? (No less than two full paragraphs.)
If I could do something different about our genius hour project I would probably change the way we were organized. To be honest we were not very organized. Some people wouldn't bring money for the supplies to make the shirts. Also we all had different schedules so we wouldn't pick a day to go donate the money. Instead, we kept pushing the day back. Some of us even delayed making the shirts or kept forgetting them at home.
A lot of the people that bought shirts got them late. We had some people come up to us and ask us for the shirt because others got theirs before them. We should have been more organized and made them all at once and then give them all at once instead of giving out five tee shirts and having other people being scared they weren't going to get theirs. In the end, everyone was pleased with the results and loved the shirts.
Reflect on what you did well during this Genius Hour process? Note your successes and accomplishments. (No less than two full paragraphs.)
Some things we did well throughout this whole project was the way we did our TED talk video, how great we made the shirts, and how much money we actually raised for the animals! The TED talk video was my favorite. We talked about everything so well and stated the whole process and said if we have adopted a pet from the animal shelter as well.
However, the shirts were great because everyone loved them including ourselves. They were tie dye and had a heart shaped design on them that also shaped into a dog/cat nose. There was not a single person who was disappointed in the shirts either. With the shirts being so great we raised $300 dollars which made us feel great about being successful on them. Therefore, we accomplished donating the money after all.
